What A World

Quote of the Day

The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion — Thomas Paine

brothers

We must remember that we are all family in the grand scheme of everything. To do good is not what is right, it is what is born out of love. Love had its hand in creating the universe. Without love, there is no creativity or care. The world is your house, the people are your family. Take care of both.

What A World

Quote of the Day

“A single conversation across the table with a wise man is better than ten years mere study of books.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

conversation

This post should be titled “mentor” instead of friends but either works for this purpose. We are all stuck in our own perspectives. This is a given. You can only describe the world through your own experiences. This is why having a conversation with a trusted advisor can open up a whole new way of thinking. The wisdom of decades can be passed down through one single interaction and change someone’s whole world.

What A World

Quote of the Day

“Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.” — Charles Spurgeon

wizard

The ultimate test of wisdom is the use of knowledge. Will you take this atom and split it to give or to take away from life? Wisdom is not just knowing what to do in crises, it is having an understanding of the mechanisms and universal laws which drive the decision.

Subconscious Walkman

What A World

Quote of the Day

“Our thoughts are mainly controlled by our subconscious, which is largely formed before the age of 6, and you cannot change the subconscious mind by just thinking about it. That's why the power of positive thinking will not work for most people. The subconscious mind is like a tape player. Until you change the tape, it will not change.” — Bruce Lipton

cassette

Bruce is touching on a good bit here. What first jumps out at me is saying the subconscious is formed before the age of 6. Ignatius of Layola - the founder of the Jesuit order was quoted as having said “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” This is backed up by modern science which tells us that the first half dozen years of a Child’s life is super critical in the formation of character, habits, physical health, mental health, attachment styles, etc.

Bruce is saying this first stage in life is so powerful that just realizing how it affected you is not enough. “until you change the tape, it will not change.” — this is where he goes a little off. We can not change the tape in our head- meaning the cassette is stuck in there pretty good (the cassette being your hardware/brain) but what we can do with both a cassette and our brains is to rewrite the information. Just write a new song over the last one. To do this in our minds we use repetition and cognitive reformation over time to achieve a new thought pattern. Old patterns have to be written over to change the pattern.

“Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.” — Khalil Gibran

This is a beautiful reminder to not be a concrete person. By that I mean do not be so fixed in your ways that you forget to laugh or cry or be a child. Do not deny yourself the nuances of being human. To stay in touch with your pain, your happiness and your sense of wonderment is to keep that innocence alive. Feel the joy as well as the pain. Experience it like it is new. That way becoming jaded is so much harder. When you don’t expect the world to be a certain way, the world becomes more open to possibilities.

Relax

What A World

Quote of the Day

“We humans have lost the wisdom of genuinely resting and relaxing. We worry too much. We don't allow our bodies to heal, and we don't allow our minds and hearts to heal.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

relax

This is a huge part of why meditation and mindfulness has made such a huge boom in western culture lately- we have no chill anymore. The world is full of people saying “Go and DO and KEEP DOING TILL YOU DIE” and we lose sight of that voice that tells us to just BE. To find stillness in the world is almost impossible but to cultivate stillness inside yourself only takes time and patience. What is your practice that cultivates tranquility and stillness?

You are unique in how you see, process, interact and manipulate reality. Only you have your unique thoughts, talents and gifts. Whatever it is that is inside of you, do it because you are the only person that can do it how you can do it.

What A World

Quote of the Day

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” — Audrey Hepburn

Real eyes realize real lies

We are all siblings in the grand scheme of nature. We come from the same something. When we reach outwards and find beauty in others, it makes us all the more beautiful. Not only are we enjoying the beauty of the world but we are facilitating the progress of beauty by seeking it and letting it be seen. When you see beauty, know it lives inside of you or you would not be able to recognize it.

Doubt

What A World

Quote of the Day

“Doubt, the essential preliminary of all improvement and discovery, must accompany the stages of man's onward progress. The faculty of doubting and questioning, without which those of comparison and judgment would be useless, is itself a divine prerogative of the reason.” — Albert Pike

Questioning reality is a favorite pastime of mine. To be a questioning and discerning person but at the same time stay open. You have no idea what you don’t know.

“A noble man compares and estimates himself by an idea which is higher than himself; and a mean man, by one lower than himself. The one produces aspiration; the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man aspires.” — Marcus Aurelius

A beautiful reminder to keep your head down and work on yourself. There is no need to compare yourself to another human being. You should be your only competition when it comes to self improvement. do it for you, not because someone else does it.

Perennial Philosophy

What A World

Quote of the Day

“Various religious systems have been given to humanity at different times, each suited to meet the spiritual needs of the people among whom it was promulgated, and, coming from the same divine source: - God, all religions exhibit similar fundamentals or first principles.” — Max Heindel

saint

I love the beautiful sentiment of perennial philosophy. The thought that most religions in the world have a certain thread of truth to them. No one religion has the whole picture, but every religion has a piece. I love this because it forces us to think of other people as our brothers and sisters. If we all have a piece of the sacred puzzle, we are all equal and each system deserves its due respect.

Change

What A World

Quote of the Day

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” — Heraclitus

river

Every second we are changing. This is a fact of life that we can not stop the clock which leaves us useless against the ravages of change. This quote reminds me that even when we come back to something from the past (a place or a memory) that it is not the same as when you first experienced it. Not the exact same memory or place and not the exact same you. Time is a river, we step in it and that moment is already lost.

Guard Your Head

What A World

Quote of the Day

“The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.” — Marcus Aurelius

ink

In ancient Zoroastrianism it is said to always uphold yourself to have right thoughts, right words and right deeds. Marcus Aurelius echoes this with his quote. Whether he knew it or not, each thought is like a scrape across your mind. Neurologically we find that a thought physically traces itself in your brain. This means that thoughts easily become thought patterns because the grooves in our brains are being dug deeper. Be careful what kind of paths you are allowing to be created in your own mind. Some paths are definitely more worthy than others and some paths are not worthy of your time at all.

Balance

What A World Quote of the Day

The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man. — Euripides

 SONY DSC

Balance in this regard should be read more like harmony. Who really knows what a balanced person is? No one. But we can see when someone is a person living in harmony. You can be an “unbalanced” person who still lives in harmony with themselves and their environment. On the other hand you can also be a balanced person who lives in disharmony. Balance yourself for yourself, live in harmony for the sake of the All.

I feel so bad for people who can not laugh at themselves. Life is full of blunders and pain. If you are unable to make light of that constant pain, life will be exponentially harder for you. If you trip and fall, laugh a bit as you get up, not out of embarrassment but because you are experiencing life and you are the one who chooses how to experience it.

Listening

“Be slow to speak, and only after having first listened quietly, so that you may understand the meaning, leanings, and wishes of those who do speak. Thus you will better know when to speak and when to be silent.” —Saint Ignatius

shush

Most of us live in that first stage of listening where we are waiting for a pause to interject our own information. This is the world we live in, the nowness and instantaneous nature of our culture has made us into selfish neurotics out of necessity. Of course you have to be ready to interject what you want to say in a modern world of constant inundation of information or else you would never get a word in. On the other hand, when you truly listen to another human, you hear way more. Try a mode of only listening for a few minutes. It can be a powerful experience to absorb someone else without the need to formulate a response.

You are in possession of everything you need for the present moment. Let the next moment worry about itself when it is a real thing! The future is false- meaning it is not reality. It is not real right now. Focus on right now until the future arrives.
